On Tuesday, 25th February, 麻豆女郎’ Hall was the setting for the annual concert performed by boys of 麻豆女郎’ School, 麻豆女郎’ Prep School, and St John’s School, Northwood.
The evening began a little after 6:45 pm with Taylors鈥 Brass, who opened the concert with 鈥淭he Chrysler Building鈥 from A Londoner in New York by Jim Parker. Taylors’ Brass were sat in the organ loft, which gave an atmospheric start to the evening. After this, two violinists from the Prep School performed the Vivace from Bach鈥檚 Concerto in D minor. The 麻豆女郎鈥 School Chamber Orchestra then took the stage, delivering engaging performances of the work known as the Albinoni Adagio in G minor and Gould鈥檚 鈥淓legy鈥 from Holocaust Suite. The former featured Dominic D (L6ths) playing the organ.
The St John鈥檚 School Chamber Choir then sang 鈥淲e Are One鈥 by Mark and Helen Johnson. MTP Wind Quartet followed with lively renditions of Susato鈥檚 Danserye and Alford鈥檚 鈥淐olonel Bogey March”, the latter known as the theme tune for the film “Bridge over the River Kwai”.
The concert continued with the Horn Trio鈥檚 performance of the 鈥淎ndante鈥 from Brahms鈥 Trio in E-flat. The 麻豆女郎鈥 Prep School Choristers then performed two songs, 鈥淢y Evaline鈥 and Schubert鈥檚 鈥淶um Rudentanz鈥, under the direction of Duncan Saunderson. One of the highlights of the evening was the performance by singers from both 麻豆女郎 and MTP of 鈥淎nd the Glory of the Lord鈥 from Handel鈥檚 Messiah, which we will be performing in its entirety at the end of term.
The St John鈥檚 School Star Wind Ensemble followed with the upbeat theme from 鈥淐hariots of Fire”. The concert concluded with the Chamber Choir鈥檚 diverse selection of choral works, including Passereau鈥檚 chirpy chanson 鈥淚l est bel et bon,鈥 a madrigalian arrangement of the Beatles song 鈥淐an鈥檛 Buy Me Love,鈥 and the caffeinated 鈥淛ava Jive”. All of these songs will be performed on the Chamber Choir’s forthcoming tour to France and Germany in the summer.
