A-Level English Language Conference

This Wednesday Lower and Upper Sixth A-level English Language students attended the annual English and Media Centre English Language Conference at Friends House, Euston, to see world leading linguists talk about their research.

This year saw talks on accent and dialect, child language acquisition, how technology affects language changing and how language choices reflect and shape ideas of gender.  A-level English Language, quite different from GCSE English Language, is the study of linguistics and how the words around us (spoken and written) are shaped and shape us in turn. Students enjoyed the day, leaving with lots of notes and ideas for discussion back in the classroom.

Please enjoy some student reflections on the day below.

Ayaan R (U6):

We heard from a variety of speakers, dealing with various different topics, such as dialects across the UK, formality in language and the impact of technology on our language. I found Rebecca Wood's talk on Child Language Acquisition (CLA) particularly interesting. In her talk, she explored how children learn to ask questions, and presented a variety of different theories there are surrounding this. Overall, it was a very useful and informative trip.

Charlie J (U6):

All A level English Language students travelled up to London to attend this highly engaging event. There were five speakers who spoke about a number of topics ranging from how children acquire language to language used towards gender in the media. It was a day enjoyed by all who attended, and it gave us all a greater breadth of knowledge in some very niche areas.
